The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is a component of the Natural Environment Research Council. Based in Cambridge UK, it has, for almost 60 years, undertaken the majority of Britain's scientific research on and around the Antarctic continent
British Antarctic Survey is working with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office to promote the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting being held in Edinburgh from 12-23 June. The meeting was last held in the UK in 1977. The Treaty - one of the world's most successful international agreements - ensures that Antarctica remains a natural reserve devoted to peace and science.
Running at the same time Discover Antarctica! is a feast of events for all the family at venues across the region.
Discover Antarctica will have something for everyone. Grab a rare chance to speak to scientists and sailors on board the two ice-ships - the British Antarctic Survey's RRS James Clark Ross and the Royal Navy's HMS Endurance - anchored at Ocean Terminal. Travel back in time at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre where an exhibition of stunning photographs taken by the first explorers of the World's coldest continent will be on display. See how scientists today survive life in the freezer in a real Antarctic field camp. And be the first to learn about Antarctica's landscape and wildlife through a new interactive educational resource. Sit back and enjoy four icy tales of the south, when filmmakers and scientists - including star of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures Lloyd Peck of the British Antarctic Survey - describe what it's really like to live and work in the Antarctic.
